Sexual assault statistics vary with each state and according to each
year. Many sexual assault cases go un-reported. Some states have higher
sexual offenses than others.
Reported Offenses
In previous statistics is has been calculated that the reports in a
single year include more than sixty-one hundred forcible rape cases to
be reported, more than fourteen hundred forcible sodomy cases to be
reported, and more than thirty-six hundred forcible fondling cases to
be reported. This brought the total number of cases reported to more
than eleven thousand with just over three thousand arrests made for
forcible sexual offenses in a single year.
Male Victims
According to RAINN, one in every thirty-three American men, three
percent, have been exposed to a rape attempt or a complete rape in his
lifetime. In 2003 it was reported that one in every ten rape victims
was male. According to the same study, nearly three million men in the
United States have been victims of rape or sexual assault.
Child Victims
According to RAINN about fifteen percent of all sexual assault and rape
victims are under the age of twelve, about twenty-nine percent are
between the ages of twelve and seventeen, nearly forty-four percent are
under eighteen-years-old, and eighty percent of all rape or sexual
assault victims are under the age of thirty. It is said that the ages
of the highest risk for sexual assault are between the ages of twelve
and thirty-four.
Girls between the ages of sixteen and nineteen are four times more
likely to be victims of sexual assault or rape than any other persons
in the general populations. These include rape, attempted rape, and
sexual assault in general. Seven percent of all girls in grades from
fifth to eighth and twelve percent of girls in grades ninth to twelfth
have been sexually abused. In parallel only three percent of boys in
grades fifth to eighth and five percent of boys in grades ninth to
twelfth have reported sexual assault.
In 1995 child protection services identified 126,000 children as
victims of either indicated or substantiated sexual abuse. Over these
over seventy-five percent were female victims, almost thirty percent
were between the ages of four and seven, and ninety-three percent of
these victims knew their attacker. In these attackers over thirty-four
percent were family members, over fifty-eight percent were
acquaintances, and seven percent were complete strangers.
Female Victims
It has been reported that one out of ever six American women has been
victim to attempted rape or complete rape in her lifetime. Nearly
eighteen million women in America have been victims of rape or
attempted rape. In the year 2003 it was reported that nine out of ten
rape victims was female.
Victim Tendencies
Due to particular circumstances, rape victims are prone to specific
tendencies. These victims are three times more likely to suffer from
depression, six times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress
disorder, thirteen times more likely to abuse alcohol, twenty-six more
times likely to abuse drugs, and four times more likely to contemplate
suicide.
Rape and Pregnancies
According to medical reports, pregnancy from a one-time unprotected
sexual incident is five percent. RAINN thus estimates that in 2005
there were more than thirty-two hundred pregnancies as a result of rape
out of more than sixty-four thousand reported cases. According to NOW
approximately six hundred women are raped daily.
